Northwest Music Month — Day 1: Greet the Sea

Welcome one and all to the first day of Northwest Music Month, where we’re turning the boring ol’ month of June into 30 days of good local music, by highlighting one band a day. Think of it like our way to preface a summer of great music. We’d like to start things off with a bang this time around by turning your attention towards Greet the Sea, a dynamic quartet that needs to be on your radar.

Coming straight out of Seattle, rock outfit quartet Greet the Sea has garnered praise from local music fans and writers alike for their panoramic approach to indie rock, which draws from golden-oldies in northwestern indie rock (think Built to Spill or early Modest Mouse), as well as some of the more notable names in second- and third-wave post-rock. Their textured and melodic instrumentation is topped with Brett Shelton’s harmonious vocals, which lend more melodic character to their often lengthy songs.

Greet the Sea, the outfit’s self-titled debut, was released in November of last year, and was well-received by those in the know. In our own review of the record, we called the album “a stunning eponymous album with really rich content. These seven gems are shimmering new music that have a unique edge.  One grapples with comparisons… but really none exist. This stuff is fresh…to be clear, their sound is unique, and really just bears witness to their real rising as a niche favorite in the vibrant Seattle music scene.”

Seattle is certainly no stranger to birthing great and notable indie rock acts, and Greet the Sea is easily among the most notable in the current wave. Though their self-titled record is the only release under their belts, it’s a promising start for the quartet, and we can only hope to continue getting tracks and albums of such high quality in the coming years.

You can follow Greet the Sea on Facebook and Twitter, and listen to their music below via Bandcamp. Greet the Sea will be playing a show on June 11th at the Substation with You.May.Die.In.The.Desert, The Celestials, and Nestoria.
